Our History
This is presently being updated in time for the 90th Anniversary on the 5th July 2026. Watch this space!
The Beginning (1936)
Oldfield Free Church (Baptist) was planted in North Greenford in 1936 by members of Greenford Baptist Church on Beechwood Avenue, Greenford. The reason was straightforward: as North Greenford developed as a residential area north of the A40 Western Avenue, it became practical for believers living in this growing community to gather for worship closer to home.
Those faithful men and women who walked north across the A40 to plant a new church could not have imagined that their obedience would bear fruit for nine decades and counting. They simply responded to God’s call to make disciples where they lived.
A Baptist Witness in North Greenford
For approximately 90 years, Oldfield Free Church has maintained an evangelical Baptist witness in the heart of North Greenford, at our home on Malden Avenue, UB6 0DJ. Through times of war and peace, social change and cultural transformation, the church has continued to worship God, preach the gospel, and serve the local community.
The church has always been affiliated with the Baptist Union of Great Britain (BUGB) and the London Baptist Association (LBA), maintaining fellowship with other Baptist churches across London and beyond.
Ministries Through the Years
Over the decades, the church has developed and sustained ministries serving different generations:
Our Girls’ and Boys’ Brigades have been a cornerstone of the church’s engagement with young people, meeting on Friday evenings and providing a Christian framework for character development, friendship, and fun.
Meeting Point, our midweek gathering for older adults, provides coffee, crafts, and friendship every Wednesday morning — a vital point of connection in a community where loneliness is a growing concern.
Beehive, our Friday morning toddler group, welcomes families with young children into a warm and welcoming environment for play and singing.
Looking Forward
As we celebrate our 90th anniversary in 2026, we do so with thanksgiving for God’s faithfulness and with fresh vision for the future. Our 2026 theme; “Growing Deep, Growing Strong” (2 Peter 3:18), reflects our commitment to deepening discipleship while continuing to reach out to the diverse community of North Greenford.
The same Spirit who birthed this church in the 1930s calls us to fresh engagement today. The harvest is still plentiful, the workers still few (Matthew 9:37–38), and the Lord still faithful to complete what He has begun (Philippians 1:6).
